An exhibition by the Assembly Arts Photographic Collective.
My contribution: a zine "Lancaster textures", containg photographs and poetry by Lancaster poets. A poetry reading took place on the opening night.
In addition, 10 Lancaster texture photographs were displayed, printed on acetate, suspended from the ceiling.
Zine (noun): Magazine
Especially: a noncommercial often homemade or online publication usually devoted to specialised and often unconventional subject matter.
The aim of my project was to display some stories of the city of Lancaster using textural photographs. The film was developed using a process involving instant coffee rather than traditional photographic developers, and a problem in the developing tank resulted in some of the negative film sticking together during the developing process.
This led to some interesting shapes on many of the images which were subsequently filled with words from local poets. Each poet chose images that fired their imagination, and created a poem inspired by that image. These poems appear alongside the relevant image in the zine.
All profits from the sale of this zine are donated to the Lancaster & District Homeless Action Service (LDHAS), which seeks to provide and improve services for those who are homeless or have housing related needs in various ways. Their recent relocation from a portacabin in Edward Street to Aalborg Place has been successful. However, this relocation was costly and LDHAS now needs donations to keep the centre running, and the profits from the Lancaster Textures project will help some of Lancasters most vulnerable people.

Photographs by the Assembly Photographic Collective
1 - 15 March 2025 at the Assembly Arts Gallery
Established in January 2024 the Assembly Photographic Collective at Assembly Arts aims to provide a supportive and collaborative space in which photographers in the Lancaster region can share their practice. The focus is on photography that embraces social, cultural, experimental and alternative techniques, catering to a diverse range of perspectives on work. Underpinned by an ethos embracing a kind and respectful attitude, the group shares knowledge and experiences pertaining to photographic practice, including exploring mutually agreed topics and techniques. Members have opportunities to expand and promote their practice including through such activities as group exhibitions, photographic field trips and events. The group meets monthly and welcomes new members.
The exhibition 'Lancaster' includes a diverse selection of images linked by the city of Lancaster, with each photographer offering a personal interpretation of the place in which they live or work.
